John was born in Indianapolis on June 22, 1903. Around 1920, his
father moved the family to a farm near Mooresville. John never
liked the farm and took to staying out late and sought out
bad company. In 1924 he had been arrested for a bungled robbery
attempt and was sentenced to the Pendleton Reformatory. Nine years
later, John emerged from prison, wanting back the years taken
from him.
Shot down by the FBI as he was leaving the Biograph movie theater on July 22nd, 1934, John's body was returned to Mooresville. He was viewed at E. F. Harvey's Funeral Home before being removed to his sister Audrey Hancock's home at Maywood near Indianapolis on the 24th. The Hancock's allowed a public viewing before the funeral the next day. John's body was laid to rest at Crown Hill Cemetery beside his mother Mollie.
Many people have been chipping away at John Dillinger and
other outlaws gravestones for many years. It is not
only disrespectful, but costly to the families
being forced to replace the markers. There won't always be
someone there to do this. If a souvenir is needed,
let's take a plastic baggy with us and collect some of the dirt.
This doesn't create any permanent damage.
And won't we feel alot better about it.
Let's stop the desecration of the headstones!
